Make a Decent Library with Only Books Found at the Goodwill

I rarely buy books at the Goodwill anymore (I have plenty of books to keep me busy) but if I was low on cash or had a small book budget, the Goodwill can actually be a great resource for finding good, cheap books. I was there yesterday with my daughter and her friend and this is what someone should buy if they had zero books and needed to build up their personal library:

Nick Horby is a great writer. HOW TO BE GOOD is funny and emotional. I loved this one. My favorite, of course, is HIGH FIDELITY, but this one would do in a pinch.

I have never read any Fredrik Backman. I know, I know. But I never hear a foul word against his books. This was there and at $3.50 a pop, I would try it!
MIDDLESEX is so good! Jeffrey Eugenides also wrote THE VIRGIN SUICIDES which is actually one of those rare occasions where I enjoyed the movie better than the book but MIDDLESEX is a coming-of-age story and has delicious family drama. It's an important read.
I love THE PASSAGE! I hope you didn't watch the show based on this book because it was crap but this book by Justin Cronin is one of my favorite apocolyptic horrors! A must read.
MISERY is one of my favorite books by Stephen King. It's short and sweet and suspenseful as all get-out. One of the best antagonists/villains in literature.
Once upon a time, I was a Patricia Cornwell junkie. I have read them all. Well maybe all of her older titles. I haven't read anything lately. THE BODY FARM is my favorite! Grisly, compelling and binge-worthy. This is like the best kind of book to read on the plane or poolside.
I just watched the trailer for the movie based on this book and it made me want to read it. THE GOLDFINCH is thick as a brick!!
I hate movie tie-in covers but sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do. This is a much better book than a movie because the graphic nature of some of the scenes were hard to watch in the span of a few hours but over the course of the book, it didn't seem as intense. I love Lisbeth Salander--one of my favorite book characters.
So 8 books at 3.50 a piece and they had a sale for buy 3 get the 4th free so $21.00 for all this bookish entertainment?? Golden.

  • Wow, those are more expensive than at the Goodwills around me!! All books are $1 at the ones I frequent.

Still, you got a good deal for some good books. I go there and Half Price Books often.
