JANELLE’S HORROR BOOK OF THE WEEK- January 25th, 2021

JANELLE’S HORROR
BOOK OF THE WEEK
Hi, I’m Janelle, the human behind @shereadswithcats
Happy Monday all! I hope you had a wonderful weekend filled with snacks, naps, reading, and football! Oh, I accidentally became addicted to a new series! Have any of you watched The Wilds? You think it’s about a bunch of girls stranded on an island, but it’s so much more than that. And, it has my girl Rachel Griffiths from Six Feet Under.
Anyway, on with the books! I bring to you the only reason I like Mondays: It’s my Horror Book of the Week! This last week I read 6 horror books and my favorite is...
The Rotting Within by Matt Kurtz
This book was so unexpected! I am very grateful to the author for sending me a review copy - it’s signed with the coolest drawing. It’s even sweeter because I loved the book. This is my first time reading Kurtz and I literally couldn’t put the book down until I finished. And do you see that cover art?...DROOL.
I am going to touch lightly on the plot in order to avoid spoilers. Kenzie Moore and her small children, Lily and Tim, left their abusive past to start fresh. They moved into Sunrise Bed & Breakfast, which is an old Victorian run by Kenzie’s estranged grandmother, who only has one simple rule for them to follow. Two elderly women occupy the third floor permanently and no one is allowed up there. What do you think happens when three curious minds are told not to enter that mysterious third floor? Duh, they go and check out the third floor (I know I would!). What happens next will keep you on pins and needles.
Things get tense real quick and this story will scare the bejesus out of you. Let me be crystal clear, I do not scare easily. It’s one of those stories where you forget to breathe. I was so caught up in this malevolent, brilliantly written horror novel that I forgot to perform a basic bodily need in order to live: BREATHING. Honestly, just go read it so we can chat about it.
The Rotting Within is perfectly paced and packed with unease, dread, raw tension, and a shock-tastic ending! This novel is nightmarishly good to the last drop.
