A 6 Sided Review of THE CORMORANT by Stephen Gregory
Marcy's Review
Stephen Gregory did such an amazing job with this story. It is written so atmospherically and beautifully that the words just stick to you, making the scenes so tangible, and leaving you with all the feels. To give you just a taste, “There dawned one of those crisp December mornings in the mountains, when the air is full of the scent of the fir trees, so cold that it scalds the nostrils, humming with sunlight under a sky of unblemished blue.” I mean just wow. The writing almost makes you...
Matt & Mindi's Side by Side Review of TRIPLE AXE by Scott Cole
Mindi's Review
Porn stars and hatchets. They go together just like Santa and his slay. I mean sleigh. You get the idea. Actually, there is quite a bit of slaying in TRIPLE AXE by Scott Cole, and I’m here for it.
Jesse Jinx is a porn star with dreams of starting her own film production company. The male directors in the business are aggressive and tyrannical, and Jesse is fed up with them. However, Ms. Jinx and her friends are starting to become increasingly disturbed as...
Kallie and Keely's Side By Side Review of Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite
Keely's Review:
Like many Horror Aficionados, I started dabbling in the genre at a young age. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Goosebumps and anything Christopher Pike ever wrote could probably be found on all our shelves in grade school. As I moved further into my adolescence, I desired a more “grown-up” version of horror and made my way through the works of Poe and Dante’s Inferno. While I adored all the stories that I experienced in those years, there was still a void that only a specific...
Sadie & John's Side By Side Review of CAMP SLAUGHTER by Sergio Gomez
Sadie's Review:
“Slasher” is a recognizable and popular genre of horror films but it is also a hotbed of activity this year in horror fiction. I read three slasher books so far in 2019 and while I used to think all slashers were created equal, CAMP SLAUGHTER convinced me that some slashers rise above the stereotypes.
Typically, Slasher books have a large cast of underdeveloped characters in order for the “psycho killer” to have plenty of people to hunt, maim and kill. I’ve also found that slasher fiction isn’t too concerned with plot,...
Beth & Tav's Side by Side Review of THE TOLL by Cherie Priest
Beth's Review
“The Toll” by Cherie Priest is southern gothic horror at its finest. I have high expectations when it comes to gothic horror. Like Gothic architecture, gothic horror must give a sense of impending doom. Your imagination must work overtime, filling every shadowy crevice with unspeakable menaces. Gothic horror is less about full out face to face encounters with boogeymen -although Priest was successful in doing that too- and more about creating a foreboding atmosphere and sense of unease. Creating such an oppressive atmosphere requires more than just festooning a couple of live oaks with...
